In the last few years, a lot of cheap electronics have flooded the global markets, especially in the personal and home entertainment. Earlier, we had a choice only between 4-5 expensive brands that developed and sold the latest products. I think Apple’s iPhone and iPad are great examples of this type of market.
Great devices that have extremely high prices, but we buy them because we have no choice! The entry of cheap electronics is fast changing that!
These electronics range from direct copies of well-known products to completely new designs, but from unknown companies. Almost all of such products come from Asia, where the electronics industry is booming.
In fact, almost all major brands go there to assemble their products. It is not that surprising that Asian companies are using the technology to design and sell their own products, and at a much lower price!
Do Cheap Electronics Mean Faulty Electronics?
Many people claim that cheap electronics are just that, cheap. They will tell you that such devices are unreliable and sure to breakdown over the weekend. All this talk reminds me of the first time Japanese cars came to our shores. Everyone complained and called them cheap cars that would never survive a trip to the mall!
Yet those “cheap cars” managed to do the job. In fact, they soon set the standards for quality and today are world leaders.
Sadly, many of the big-name American expensive cars didn’t make the cut. I think that cheap electronics are in a similar place today.
Many of them actually do a pretty good job, especially if you factor in the low, low prices!
The Best Places to Buy Cheap Electronics
It has been years since I spent big-brand money on basic electronics. My search for inexpensive, decent quality electronics has been met by the following:
Electronics Stores:
Still the best place to find great deals on cheap electronics. The biggest advantage is that you get to see the real thing. Build quality and feel can help you make a good decision! However, many electronics devices do not come with any long-term warranty from the manufacturer. You will save a lot of dollars, but must be
willing to take a chance!
Online Auction Sites:
Electronics are all over the internet, especially on sites such as eBay and Craigslist. You can find some really amazing rates here, but will have to take a chance on product quality. I would suggest checking out the actual product at a store before ordering a similar device online.
Online Directories:
Asian manufacturers have several online directories that help you connect directly with the producers. This can mean great savings since all middlemen are removed! These are especially useful if you want to buy cheap electronics in bulk and re-sell them in the US.
